I always felt like an asshole driving my 600cc at night in city. Instant and completely linear torque. It feels amazing. You can literally throw it on the ground without braking anything or spill fluid (that's what its owner do every-time, almost like a cheap bicycle). Mind you, it was the equivalent of a 125cc.You can daily ride on anything. Much of what people ride is based upon the aesthetic they want, then justifying it after the fact. Edit: Ducati specs says the V2 0-60 is 2.8 seconds and the V4 is 2.9 seconds, (the V2 is 3.09 seconds though, I think that 2.8 is bullshit from all the other data I've seen) but I think if I remember right the 0-100 is where the V2 is actually faster. Back to Google! The newest Monster or an MT-09 are probably too much bike for a beginner, both are 100+ HP. But take a look at an MT-07 or a Monster 796 / 797 (the one with the 803 cc aircooled engine). Both those bikes have around 70 HP, and "friendly" engine characteristics.
Interesting bit of trivia. The youngest person to go round the world on a motorbike did so on a ducati desert sled (mechanically, basically this bike). 55, 000 miles in just over a year. Street vs 1100 Evo, I'd go Evo but understand that Triumph maintenance in those years is closer to Japanese bike maintenance. The Ducati will require more attention and more expensive service costs. Belts you can do yourself without much effort.
