I am looking at buying a boat that has an Evinrude 88HP SPL (late 80's) on it and was wandering if anyone knows anything about these motors. Any known problems? Mar 11, 2007 · I've got a 1995 Evinrude 88 SPL, and I am getting about 120psi on all 4 cylinders. You can have as low as 80-90PSI, the key is that all 4 are withing 10% of each other. If you've got one or two cylinders that are way off, you probably have carbon buildups holding your rings down and not allowing compression, or you've got a bad piston/ring/etc. Jim Blessed. The pressure and temp controlled cooling system contains the pressure valves, springs, and the t stats. The circulation of water through the cooling system by the water pump is controlled by the balanced action between the pressure control valves, water pump pressure and the t stats. The needle and seats will normally shut the fuel off incoming to the carbs when the bowls fill and the ball valves in the hose should hold pressure in the bulb.
