Tighten the adjusting nut until there's a slight drag when moving the feeler gauge. Do not over-tighten or you will risk damage to the camshaft in a short period of time.Stu you posted you set yours between high and low settings.. in my 87-88 trx250x manual both intake and exhaust are .004" but in the 85-87 fourtrax manual it is .004"-.008" on both intake and exhaust, so maybe .006" would be a safe bet even if it got pinched a little on the tightning the nut back up. I would go ahead and clean the carb and see what that does.2) Slide feeler gauge between the adjusting screw and sub-rocker arm. Adjust the screw by loosening the locknut, turning the screw, and retightening the locknut. Check the clearance again to confirm it's where you want it. Be certain the valve clearance is within factory spec. Valve clearance should be 0.15 (0.006) for both intake and exhaust (1995-2007) models. Check cylinder compression and change the engine oil and filter. Engine Idle Speed Adjustment . 1.
