Midcontinent rift system

The Midcontinent rift system in the subsurface south of the Lake Superior region has been well imaged by magnetic, gravity and seismic surveys, however only a few wells have penetrated and recovered core from rift-basin fill in this region.

The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) is an example of a mafic-dominated continental rift where silicic magmatism is locally significant. The best-preserved example of this is on the NE limb of the rift along the North Shore of Lake Superior where rhyolites comprise a large percentage (up to 25%; Green, J.C., Fitz, T.J., III, 1993. Extensive felsic lavas and rheoignimbrites in the Keweenawan ...Exposures in the Lake Superior region, and associated geophysical evidence, show that a 2000 km-long rift system developed within the North American craton ??? 1109-1087 Ma, the age span of the most of the volcanic rocks. This system is characterized by immense volumes of mafic igneous rocks, mostly subaerial plateau basalts, generated in two major pulses largely by a hot mantle plume. The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) or Keweenawan Rift is a 2,000 km (1,200 mi) long geological rift in the center of the North American continent and south-central part of the North American plate. It formed when the continent's core, the North American craton , began to split apart during the Mesoproterozoic era of the Precambrian , about 1.1 ...

The Mid-Continent Rift formed the Lake Superior Basin as continent tried to split into pieces. Younger sedimentary rocks filled in on top of the volcanic rocks as the mountains eroded and rivers flowed into the rift basin. ... The Western arm of the rift system contains the "African Great Lakes" which include some of the deepest lakes in the ...The Midcontinent Rift System (darker) is a failed rift that occurs under Lake Superior. Credit: Iowa Geological Survey. Lakes Michigan and Huron are connected by the Mackinac Straits; some people consider them to be a single lake. The lakes encircle the state of Michigan for a good reason. We report the ages of detrital zircons (207 Pb/ 206 Pb LA-ICPMS; n p 1188) from 12 clastic units that are representative of the Mesoproterozoic Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) of North America.Magmatism of the MRS spanned 1115-1085 Ma. The Puckwunge, Nopeming, and Bessemer basal sandstones and the Oronto and Bayfield Group sandstones …The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift system of North America is one of the world's major continental rifts and hosts a variety of mineral deposits. The rocks and mineral deposits of this 2000 km long rift are exposed only in the Lake Superior region.

The Midcontinent Rift. The copper that was mined in the Keweenaw formed during a spectacular period in Earth's history—at a time when the North American continent was splitting apart. This separation began about 1.1 billion years ago and at its peak had a length of over 3,000 kilometers. Both sites are located along the 1200-mile Midcontinent Rift System, a tectonic fissure through the middle of North America. Building A Hydrogen Market. The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS; Wold and Hinze, 1982) is recognized by a significant elongate magnetic and gravity anomaly extending northeastward from south-central Kansas into the Lake Superior region and hence southeastward into the Michigan basin (Figure 45). Van Schmus and Hinze (1985) and Dickas (1984, 1986) provide excellent overviews ...Mar 1, 2018 · The Keweenawan Midcontinent rift system was imposed upon the terrane suture in our study area at ca. 1100 Ma. This event nearly separated the ancient continent and imparted enormous volumes of mafic magma to various depths in the crust (Hinze et al., 1997; Nicholson et al., 1997; Vervoort et al., 2007; Stein et al., 2015), engendering numerous high-grade base and precious metal deposits ...

It formed when the North American craton began to split apart during the Mesoproterozoic era (1,100 Ma). As a result of the extension and possibly the effects of a rising mantle plume, a thick layer of basalt and numerous reverse and normal faults were formed. The basalt layer is ...

The Midcontinent rift system is a 1.1-b.y.-old structure extending from Kansas, through the Lake Superior region, and into southern Michigan. The rift is filled with thick sequences of basaltic volcanic rocks and clastic sediments.
