VI. Identifying the Invertebrate Sea Fossils, Part One There are so many invertebrate sea fossils that we could cover, so we are going to take two chapters to cover them. What is an invertebrate? An invertebrate is an animal without a backbone. There are several fossil animals that meet this criterion that are quite common in the fossil record:.
