Verizon has retired its email service and no longer offers Verizon.net …When I went into the settings and changed them back to imap.aol.com (incoming/port 993) and smtp.verizon.net (outgoing/port 465), per AOL web suggestions. Outlook responded with 'The IMAP server was not responding and that settings cannot be changed. Oh, and by-the-way, I can login and access my AOL email with no problem at their webmail website.
