One thing to add with his answer. In pirated system, sentinel ship never get alerted. So if you stay in ship and harvest resources from there, you are safe. Not sure if it'll work for you, but I was able to get past this bug when I had your problem. After killing the walker and it didn't finish the 6th wave, I wandered far enough away from the pillar until it gave me a message in the corner to return. I then started fighting sentinels until I made it to 5 stars wanted level and killed the walker.
